Review of Saw V (2008) by John M — 31 May 2011
Really, I'm running out of things to say about this series because they've been made the same damn movie four times in a row. So Jigsaw has been dead for two movies now, but they still manage to feature him front and center by using flashbacks.
He actually had another apprentice besides Amanda, Detective Hoffman, (Costas Mandylor, who is a broke manâ(TM)s Sean Bean), and he is the real heir to Jigsaw, carrying on his legacy with the most elaborate traps yet.
If you thought Darren Lynn Bousman was doing a bad job, you haven't seen this one yet. At least Bousman had a style about his work. This one doesnâ(TM)t have anything that really stands out about it.
The only thing you might remember upon walking away from it is the traps, and they are so over the top, they've reached the point of being silly and ridiculous. The writing is so lazy, lackluster and lackadaisical, it sticks out so much that they have no idea how to build characters.
It's like RedLetterMedia's Phantom Menace review: Describe any of the Saw characters without saying what they look like, what kind of costume they wore, or what their profession or role in the movie was.
... Yeah, I thought so. Hopefully it picks up in Saw VI like I have heard it does, because it would difficult to get worse.
