Review of Saw IV (2007) by Lovro H — 01 Apr 2015
So far the worst film of the franchise. Brings back what we like to see: the traps, but fails mostly as a film. The first scene with the dissecting of dead Johns body was the best single thing in the franchise so far, it looked so good, had every little thing thought out, as isn't for the faint of heart.
After that however it kinda falls apart. The acting is back to bad, the script still can't be made decent, and the plot is kinda dumb. Making the cop chase around through traps to find his long lost partner is different and all, but it isn't greatly executed.
The traps are cool and nice to see, but the fact that a police officer is forcing them into the traps isn't. No cop would do such a thing. Besides that without Jigsaw to take up film time, we are stuck with so much filler and characters we don't know it are about, it's just jumping all over the place.
John's ex being interrogated, the little girl who was beat by her dad, it doesn't matter and is a pain to watch. Beside all that we get to have some actual scares for once in this horror franchise, but they don't last long.
By the ending we actually figure out who was setting those traps, and they kill off the one good guy who has lasted and one of my favourite characters, Detective Matthews. This was a disappointment to me, as was seeing some bad blood effects for some of the deaths.
The ending once again skips around the earlier parts to piece together the ending, which apparently can't ever be made remotely simple, and why there is still more sequels after this one, I have no idea.
Overall pretty bad, worst of the franchise so far, and I won't be watching after the fifth instalment. The trademark style of the Saw films is in this one.
