Review of Saw III (2006) by Zack R — 24 Jun 2011
After the slight (personal) disappointment of Saw II, I hoped the trilogy would have a fitting conclusion. And it did.
Or WOULD have, due to Lionsgate/Twisted Picture's (Not sure who is responsible) milking of the Saw cash cow, the movie is just the ending to the FIRST trilogy.
Still, it's one of the better films in the series. It's not that well-written, sadly (Except for Jigsaw, of course; but I can't give him credit for that anymore since I expect him to be great in every film (Which he is)) or subtle, or anything like that. It's just that what it does, it does well. And that's delivering a LOT of gore. Saw III is the first film in the series to start focusing less on subtlety, and more on being uproariously gory. And here? It works wonderfully.
While it's not well-written, it's fairly well acted. DEFINITELY a huge improvement over Saw II's at times sophomoric acting which cost the movie a lot of it's tension. Thankfully, an actual sense of drama is conveyed in the main plot. Characters actually have a little more depth than "DEAR GOD WHAT IS HAPPENING TO ME!" hysterics.
The climax in particular is haunting, depressing, and an example of quite literally ending with a "Bang".
Saw III is proof that movies don't always have to be subtle and deep to be enjoyable.
