Review of Saw III (2006) by Willis T — 10 Oct 2011
The third installment sees another drop in quality for the franchise. Gone is the stylish and intelligent craftsmanship of the original, replaced with muddled plotting that often needlessly cuts back and forth between the current narrative and flashbacks to the events of Saw and Saw II.
The gore and violence are regularly superfluous to the story being told, with some scenes unnecessarily excruciating to watch. Bell is the only cast member who gives a credible performance, with Smith grating (as well as being given the scripts most embarrassingly poor lines), Macfayden overacting, and Soomekh just plain bad.
The film's climax redeems it somewhat, but this is undoubtedly the point where the Saw films began becoming mundane and no longer worthwhile.
