Review of Saw III (2006) by Tristan M — 01 Apr 2015
I this this is the best Saw after the original, and it takes a different approach. It takes us more into the life of the killer, and his fading life. There is still a game going on, but it is a mere side-story to satisfy audiences in my opinion, and doesn't do a great job.
It takes up very little of the movie, the traps are less creative and gory, with the exception of the brutal last trap, twisting your neck and limbs until death. The real story is the saving of John, how he is not a murderer, how Amanda is his helper, and why he does his games.
The surgery on Johns head was really hard to watch, the drilling and cutting of his skull, and looked very convincing. The ending is good, full of flashing around previous parts of the film to explain it, and could have been the ending to the franchise before it really went to far, but we have no such luck.
The acting and script are far improved, which is really helpful, but the overall slow pace, confusing story, lack of the traps that we know this franchise for, makes for only a semi enjoyable film. Second best after the original, not in story or originality, but in film making.
