Review of Saw (2004) by Liam M — 17 Jul 2013
This is a deeply flawed movie, but a very watchable one if you don't think too hard about it. It's even better when you pretend the sequels and rip-offs don't exist. I give Saw credit for putting the twisted (though imperfect) plot over the gore and torture, of which there is just enough to turn the stomach and establish the sickness of the villain, but not enough to lump it into the genre it tragically spawned, "torture porn.
" What it lacks in real scares and suspense, it makes up for on pure grungy atmosphere and a sense of lurid fun. It's no Se7en, but it's worth a watch as long as you have the stomach for it.
