Review of Saw (2004) by Campbell P — 29 Mar 2015
Saw is a genre defining movie that's about a serial killer that technically isn't, he tricks people into doing sinister stuff to themselves and to others. The main story focuses on Larry (a respected doctor) and Adam (takes pictures of people for money).
They both haven't had enough appreciation for what they have in life so Jigsaw makes them fight for what they have. While this is an interesting premise for a movie it really didn't appeal to me.
To start off there's way to much unnecessary gore in this movie. The bloodied guy in the middle of the room really didn't need to be there, he played a factor in the final act but he didn't need to be there.
How that one woman had to slice open that guy to get the key to her death device was really stupid and disturbing. This film could've been just as effective without all the gore it had. Everything could've just been offscreen and seen the terror on their faces.
The positives in this horror film is that the acting was pretty good with the exception of two people. The one African American dude and Zep. When they were fighting it was some of the worst acting I've ever seen.
The other standout in this film is that the setups are clever but really just an excuse for gore. The machines again could've been offscreen and still make for a really intense scene. The whole plot line was all over the place in terms of the character backgrounds and the backstory on Jigsaw.
Saw had cool moments for sure but ultimately this whole movie was just an excuse for gore to show off. D+.
