Review of Saw (2003) by Jacob B — 26 Oct 2015
The start of this hilarious torture porn franchise began with this underrated gem. Saw is a movie I constantly defend, for it is a great movie piled into a crap franchise. This movie is eerie, tense, and scary.
The acting, aside from Tobin Bell, is pretty terrible. That being said, that never seemed to bother me, as the directing, writing, and cinematography overpowered the acting. There are scenes of this movie that actually creep me out to this day, namely the Reverse Bear Trap scene.
What I love about this movie is that all the "torture" is offscreen, so that adds to the scariness (something the sequels forgot about). The ending is one of my favorite movie endings of all time.
The movie is problematic and has terrible acting, but the writing, directing, cinematography, scary tone, cleverness, and fantastic ending overpower those flaws. 8.5/10.
