Review of Saw (2003) by Johnathon W — 02 Oct 2017
Solid beginning to the franchise that set a new standard in the horror genre. The cast is solid, for the most part, though Cary Elwes overacting at the end is still noticeable. Behind the camera, James Wan crafts an intriguing thriller with a fantastic hook (the idea of traps that give the victims a chance to escape is ingenious).
It is also surprisingly bloodless, compared to the sequels, playing up more of the thriller & mystery aspect. The ending is a bit of a cheat ("Saw II" still has the best one) but nevertheless sets the standard for all the ones to follow.
Not perfect, are even the best in the series, but great fun to watch, nevertheless.
