Review of Saving Private Ryan (1998) by Hannah K — 01 Feb 2013
Instantly became one of my top 5 favorite films. There was not a single thing in this movie that I didn't think was completely realistic or anything that looked at all fake. This has the greatest effects of all time. the greatest effects are not in fantasy things like Avatar, but in realistic things like this.
The opening scene I was not fully prepared for. I sat down and started watching this eating a bowl of ice cream, and I was stunned by the opening scene that I had to stop eating until about 10 minutes after it was done. But man what an unbelievable scene. So real, so intense, and I felt like I could picture myself out there.
The final battle was even more intense then the first one. I was so amazed by everything in this film. Spielberg is my favorite film director, not only because he makes great movies, but because his films are epic.
The acting in this film made the battle scenes even more convincing. Like the scene when the guy gets shot in the stomach, and you see him shaking, and then he asks for morphine. I just felt like this film was just so real.
I believe that Spielberg has two types of films. The historical ones like "Schindlers List," then there are the more adventurous and more special effect oriented ones like "Jaws," "Jurassic Park." This film falls into both categories. Spielberg just never fails as a director it amazes me. This is also just another great film in Tom Hanks filmography.
