Spielberg kind of has fun with the "men on a mission" story but also knows how to show the devastation of war. It's pretty perfectly shot. Yes, over the top and the typical Spielberg melodrama that can be annoying, but without a doubt one of the more memorable war films in the last couple decades for how immersive it is.
Not a lot of filmmakers are able to portray this area of film in the shockingly vivid way Spielberg is able to.
