When this came out, I watched it over and over and over...come to think of it, I grew up on Spielberg movies (SPR, Jaws, and Jurassic Park). Who can forget that opening scene? I think it did WWII justice (as well as a movie can) as far as how hard it was for the soldiers and how intense it was.
I'm sure the exceptional acting helped in that department. One of the very best war movies ever made.
