Review of Saving Mr. Banks (2013) by Sujit O — 19 Jun 2014
This movie was a very special movie in my opinion and worthy of many oscars if not for the outstanding quality of the other movies last year. First of all, I'm incredibly passionate about animated movies and the way their stories are told , especially the old classics.
This is exactly what they try to live up to in this film and anyone interested in these themes would be absolutely thrilled to watch this. The movie focuses on P.L. Travers the author of the known book Mary Poppins.
She is rather forced to sell the rights of her book to Walt Disney for adapting it into a film. The interesting feature here is how the backstories play such an important part in the formation to the book, to the author's character as a person and to Walt Disney as a separate character.
Due to the reason of how deeply the emotion of this book lie in her memories we understand its hard for her to give up her life's work but at the same time from the other perspective of Walt Disney and his story team, it seems like she could be very hesitant and irritating at times.
However due to Disney's promise he has kept to his children, he is adamant to make it work. Thus the characters are forced to meet somewhere down the line as they obviously do but as you see, the emotions playing around have been very well crafted into the movie that it really got me teared up multiple times during the movie.
Thomas Newman does a brilliant job with the soundtrack and could not be better for a movie so crucial on the music side of it. Emma Thompson does a great job and so does Tom Hanks as we've come to expect.
However Colin Farrell really get his perfect role in this film and I really wouldn't have been surprised if the oscars would have granted his a nomination for his fine performance.
