Review of Saving Mr. Banks (2013) by Kathy D — 21 Sep 2014
She had me with her first scene, her first moment looking into the camera. Emma Thompson is just brilliant as P.L.Travers, the 'difficult' author of Mary Poppins who proves a force to be reckoned with, even for Walt Disney.
I especially liked the flashback scenes to her childhood, with Colin Farrell as her father. That whole back-story is the heart of the film, which informs everything in the present.
I enjoyed the scenes depicting the 'making of' Mary Poppins production, especially the 'reconstructions; of how the songs came together. The end-credits feature some original recordings which seem to show that the film is pretty authentic.
Ultimately this film may not linger long in the memory, but Emma Thompson is fantastic, and it's a great accompaniment to an all-time classic family film.
