Review of Saving General Yang (2013) by Brian L — 18 Jul 2013
Am not unfamiliar with the story. It has always been part of our history subject though not in depth. In fact, the story on their widows who eventually became a widow army has been more popular than their male counteparts. (On a side note, am amazed at how much male descendants they have produced to continue on the legacy. It was like this family was destined to live a life of military) Yet, it was still hard not to get emotional on seeing them die one by one - regardless of looking at this from a mom's point of view, a son's point of view, a brother's point of view, or even a father's point of view.
ZaiZai (Vic Zhou) is love <3 He has quite an awesome fight scene that I felt so cheated when he died just like that. It was a tight attempt to kill off his character (even if reality said that he would die).
I love the subtlety in the end where all weapons of the brothers have some contributed to the fight scene. It felt like they were still there even if they were not.
In the end, it seemed like no matter how great one is, there is just one critical moment in one's life that one can create stupid decision that would be irrevocable and would turn to run the wheel of misfortune. On the other hand, in that critical moment, it would also show that what matters most trumped logic - whether it was a good choice or not will be depend on how and when one looked at it.
