Review of Saving Face (2004) by Cath O — 02 Mar 2008
A big criticism of a lot of lesbian movies is that they are either badly made or they have unhappy endings. This is one that doesn't disappoint in either respect. It is set in the New York's Chinese community and features that fabulous Joan Chen as the mother of a lovely young doctor who meets a ballet dancer she falls for, however, family drama interfere with their romance.
The family stuff is really nicely observed and the relationship is realistic and non-idealised. Lovely performances and well made. Don't let the subtitles put you off. Really good film.
