Review of Saving Face (2004) by Kevin C — 07 Apr 2008
I remember being very interested in seeing this film upon hearing the concept. However, it wasn't until early last year that I finally remembered about it and rented the DVD release. Not only is the presented story so vastly courageous for a film by a Chinese-American, but it's conception and realization is also an amazing story.
When looking at just the technical side, the film is fairly well produced. However, it's concept concerning the theme of accepting yourself is presented in three forms: (1) Wil's sexuality, (2) Ma's unmarried pregnancy, and (3) the director Alice Wu's desire to be a filmmaker.
This is one of the rare films that strengthens its themes and believability because its existence is proof that Ms. Wu was able to extend beyond her parents' wishes and turn her screenplay into a feature film.
It's a true story without being about itself.
