Review of Saved (2009) by Michael D — 10 Aug 2010
A young Christian girl gets pregnant in a uber conservative Christian school in "Saved!".
This film was highly recommended by sources I trust so my expectations were really high. That was probably what lead most to its down fall in my opinion.
First of all, I thought it was going to be a much sharper, more realistic satire of my Christian School experience. It was not. It was highly dramatic, frankly cartoony portrayal of young fanatical Christians. Every time I heard Mandy Moore's character talk, I just cringed. I didn't really like any of the characters very much because they were so one dimensional whether they be "Christians" or "not Christians". There was no middle ground in this movie, the characters either were immensely judgmental and hateful or they were not Christians at all. I found this off putting. I heard the filmmakers were raised by Christians, well they must not be the kind of Christians I grew up around.
To top it all off, it was supposed to be a comedy, and I didn't laugh out loud once. It reminded me of a B movie version of Juno, even though this was made before Juno. I can't recommend it, but maybe we have different tastes.
