Review of Saved (2009) by Daniel G — 29 Mar 2011
Saved! is one of those must see religious films, even if you are interested or not, it's just one you have to see. Saved! confronts that stage of faith where things start to make less sense and fundamentalism isn't as easy it's cracked up to be.
Yet while it's a popular film it really is just okay. There is nothing overly great about Saved! but that is not to say that it's a bad movie, not at all. Saved! is good, but it's good. It's starts off in a whirlwind of comedy, plot, snappy dialogue, and interesting characters but towards the third act it really slows down and comes a very paint by numbers after school flick.
Jena Malone is very good in her role as Mary and Mandy Moore plays the crazy Jesus-Freak Hilary fantastically, but the real run away star is Eva Amurri as the 'evil' sexy and funny one-Jewish-girl-at-a-Christian-school Cassandra.
Patrick Fugit and Macaulay Culkin are very plain in their performances and Martin Donovan as Pastor Skip and Mary-Louise Parker basically sleep walk through there roles. To it's credit it's got plently of laughs and a few good morals, but in the end, Saved! really is something you see and later forget then get reminded off and might see again.
