Review of Savages (2012) by Ross H — 08 Dec 2013
I watched the extended version on dvd, much the best way to see it I suspect, it's well worn territory, drug wars, Mex vs USA and more characters than a chinese menu.
Stpne's a Vietnam vet. and gives credence to violence and it's effects. The glamour of Laguna beach and fast money is contrasted with day of the dead ritualized slaughter. It has a few art movie effects that seem to have confused some, in the extended version the two-endings conclusion works well. Stone is a great director but unfortunately the two main female actors don't quite carry their load, the men do but their roles are more predictable.
