Review of Savages (2012) by Vern H — 12 Jan 2013
The film is undermined by the failure of the central relationships to convince. Johnson, Lively & Kitsch have all been fine separately in other films, but there is just no chemistry here, which is a problem because the rest of the plot hangs off their three-way relationship. It's not the dynamic of three that's a problem, but who those individuals are. Blake Lively's character in particular doesn't seem someone anyone would risk their lives over.
On the plus side are the performances from Salma Hayek and Benicio del Toro, who relish their nasty little roles, although Hayek's character arc is a bit shaky.
Oliver Stone is always a kinetic director, and there are some fantastic sequences but it's certainly no Natural Born Killers, or even U Turn.
