Review of Savages (2012) by Philip W — 08 Jan 2014
The movie is too full of a grimy glossiness, if that makes sense. Shot on ovefsaturated digital, the movie has some trademark Oliver Stone characteristics, but it doesn't feel like a movie about real people.
Salma Hayek is the only one in the movie with whom it is somewhat possible to sympathize as she gives her character plenty of pathos as a woman stuck in a male-dominated position: drug kingpin. Aaron Johnson, Benicio de Toro, Emile Hirsch, and John Travolta made me expect something better than I got.
Competent but not good.
