Review of Savages (2012) by Jiana W — 25 Mar 2013
A rather unpleasant movie. Aside from some nice camerawork and shots, it's really quite ugly and sadistic. It features characters that you don't really find yourself caring about very much. You just realize that you hate one group of characters more than the others, and thus root for their triumph over the ones you despise the most.
Aaron Johnson has matured quite a bit. He no longer has that squeaky, frog-like voice and boyish appearance. This was a good role for him to break out of that "Kick Ass" mold, for sure. Blake Lively plays a whore who has such low self-esteem and poor self-image that she shares her booty with two guys in the same house and live the fast life with them due to their drug entrepreneurship.
Her hobbies are shopping, the beach, and banging her boyfriends. They never tried to make her character, Ophelia, appear like a beacon of strong femininity so that's wonderful. Because, if anything, she sets womanhood back 20 years here.
