Review of Savages (2006) by Michelle A — 07 Jan 2009
An interesting, touching examination of a difficult subject. In the cinema, death is almost always treated with excessive sentimentality and cliched phrasing dripping in sap, but this film provides a fresh, realistic take on an already-strained family trying to cope with the prolonged death of their father.
My only complaint is that the humor is chiefly derived from standard devices usually seen in big-budget goofball comedies, which stands in startling contrast to earnest, indie feel of the rest of the film.
But I am willing to overlook this, chiefly owing to the superb performances turned in by the entire cast.
