Review of Savage Grace (2007) by Ruby M — 25 Dec 2008
:rotten: :rotten: (out of four).
An over-the-top performance by the commendable Julianne Moore adds to the emptiness of this story..

Based on true events, Moore stars as a socialite who was murdered in 1972. It focuses on her relationship with her estranged husband and disturbed son..

The material is pretty interesting and the production is extremely well done. The problems are mostly with the development of the characters. It tries too hard to paint these people as mere cliches that they are not able to become real flesh and blood creations. Moore in particular rarely breaks free of this. She is shown as a mostly shallow villainess. So much so that if she had a mustache she would likely be twirling it for the whole picture..

A disappointment all the way around for this Sundance entry..
