Review of Savage Grace (2007) by Ekim C — 01 Oct 2007
Most people will have a tough time watching it. "Savage Grace" tackles a very taboo issue and a very special American family story spanning from the 1940ies all the way to 1972. I somehow "made" it through the movie, but this tale's always on the verge of making me uncomfortable, yet still manages to keep the balance between grotesque and an honest portrayal.
Kalin's made a courageous move, but it took him 13 years from start to finish and some European help to get it done (the film was shot entirely in Spain, just like "The Machinist"). Julianne Moore and Eddie Redmayne are one scary and odd pair of a frustrated mother and bisexual son.
Extravaganza and spleen meet with false parenting and lifelong dillusions. And there's only one exit out of this misery... Kudos also to the Spanish costume designer - very accurate job. Well done, but Moore will once again miss out on an Oscar.
Nevermind. She got guts and deserves all the praise for this brilliant performance.
