Review of Savage Grace (2007) by Dave J — 04 Aug 2008
It's really disturbing, without a doubt, but that's not what makes the film not work. The heightened sense of melodrama that Julianne Moore usually does so well just falls flat on its face, maybe because of the subject matter, maybe because of the characters.
The film is a real test to see how far a filmmaker can push his characters, to see how ugly and hateful they can really be. Eddie Redmayne is really good as the empty soul harmed by his mother's serious issues.
The photography, production design, and period details are the highlight, though.
