Review of Sausage Party (2016) by Rob D — 12 Mar 2017
Seth Rogen and Kristin Wiig lend their voices in the animated comedy Sausage Party. Rogen is Frank a hot dog that a hot dog bun Brenda (Wiig). The two both look forward to the day that they will be picked up from the supermarket and go "beyond". This beyond stage is what they believe is enlightenment and freedom from the store. Little do they know that being picked is the worst thing that could happen to them.
After an accident occurs while being chosen Frank and Brenda traverse the giant store looking for the truth behind going beyond. They encounter a lesbian taco (Salma Hayek), a bagel (Ed Norton), and have an angry douche (Nick Kroll) on their heels looking for revenge for the incident. In the meantime, Frank's friends learn the truth of the beyond as they become slaughtered by humans for food.
Sausage Party is a movie that has a clever enough premise, but was better off remaining just that. The film main concept wears thin pretty soon, and there are still tons of time to fill. There is pretty of racist jokes, and metaphorical jokes of sexual innuendo as expected. The film seems pretty juvenile from start to finish, and thinks it is cleverer than it actually is. The film is filled with cursing, violence, and gets pretty raunchy to remind the audience that it is not your typical animated comedy, but I was definitely ready for this to be over. Although I did not particularly enjoy this movie, I hope more animated comedies that are darker and mature do get made as a result of the success of this film.
