Review of Sausage Party (2016) by Lane Z — 21 Nov 2016
Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and Co. continue to set a standard for juvenile comedies in the 21st century. We have been blessed with more studs than duds over the years, but none of those compare to what you can experience when you sit down for a viewing of Sausage Party.
It's edgy and thoughtful at the same time. It's raucous yet subdued. Most importantly, the writing matches the absurdity of seeing food come to life, in a good way. Each piece of food is given its own identity with stylized jokes catered to its kind. Though it's definitely racist and pretty offensive, the idea here isn't to offend but invoke laughter, which it does at a high rate.
The bagel voiced by Ed Norton has my vote for best food/actor performance. Coming in a close second is anything Bill Hader does. If you can allow yourself to grasp just how silly something like this is, especially for adults, you can really lose yourself in the story, which is pretty large for a movie as simple as this looks on the surface.
Sausage Party is cheeky, clever and new. That's hard to say for a lot of movies coming out these days, but this adult animated film should be viewed by all ages appropriate.
