Review of Sausage Party (2016) by Lovro H — 10 Jan 2017
Sausage Party is an adult animated movie about food that's alive. The story is very similar to the real world. You got all these groceries that live in a shop and they believe that when a human buys you and takes you to the "Great Beyond", you're blessed and you get to live in some sort of Heaven.
There's all kinds of food that represent different races, sexes and nationalities. The juices are Jews, fruits are gay people, tacos/spices/tequillas are the Mexicans and so on and on, you get the point.
So, what we have here in Sausage Party is basically the world of today, but in food form. Everybody believes in the Great Beyond and when it's presented to them that it doesn't exist, that it's not what they all thought it would be, they refuse to believe it, they'd rather believe in happier things rather than the facts.
Then there's the whole sex thing. It's a sin to be out of package and have a sexual relationship before you get to the Great Beyond, if you have sex before you get picked up by a customer (they call them gods), you're not eligible for the Great Beyond/Heaven.
This entire movie is basically a commentary on religion and in that, it succeeds. It's the comedy where it doesn't really succeed. The movie features constant swearing and vulgar imagery that just gets tiresome and boring about halfway through.
South Park Bigger, Longer & Uncut also has a ton of swearing and raunch, but it's dealt with much more care. There the main characters are elementary school children who have only just found out what swear words are, so it's obvious they'll be using them constantly.
Plus, it's way funnier to hear 4th graders swearing than grown up food. The humour also doesn't work because the movie's subject is very serious. It deals with racism, politics and religion a lot, and it's so close to how it is in real life that I was just sitting there and thinking to myself how stupid we people are.
The animation is wonderful, though. It's really creative and fluid, it's on par with some of the Disney movies even, I'd say. The voice acting is great all around. It's just not funny.
It tries too hard with the swearing and showing raunchy stuff that it just grows old quickly, but thankfuly the concept is great and I loved the satire. All in all, it's a good movie. I'd recommend seeing it, if only for the satire.
