Review of Sauna (2008) by Trent R — 18 Jun 2009
An interesting, conceptual horror film that uses filth as a metaphor for sin, memory, and history. The Sauna itself represents a place of spiritual resignation, as redemption is absent. A stark film, with no real shocks or humorous release, but fine performances and well-paced, escalating dread.
The cinematography is excellent, though no comparison should be made with Tarkovsky simply due to the presence of water, reflections, debris, etc. I found the ending adequate, but overly literal.
