Review of Saturday Night Fever (1977) by Stephan L — 23 Jan 2010
Ah John Travolta. WELCOME BACK KOTTER was initially a vehicle for Gabe Kaplan's comic stylings (Who was Gabe Kaplan Gen-Yers might ask? That is another story...), but it was John Travolta as "Sweathog" Vinnie Barbarino who made the show a hit.
A few years later, Travolta strutted down the streets of the borough of Brooklyn New York while the Bee-Gee's "Staying Alive" played on the soundtrack in the movie's opening sequence.
Worth seeing for Travolta's iconic portrayal of Tony Manero, a figure just as cool as Vinnie Barbarino ever was. Its also a snapshot of the Carter-era Disco scene in NYC. You have to have a tolerance for the Disco soundtrack, however.
