Review of Saturday Night Fever (1977) by Steve S — 07 Apr 2010
***1/2 (out of four).
Today, "Saturday Night Fever" is mostly seen as a disco movie that featured a huge soundtrack with music from the Bee Gees and Jwith ohn Travolta dancing while wearing a white suit. That's all true, but there is a lot more going on with this film.
John Travolta is Tony Manero. He works in a Brooklyn hardware store as a clerk during the day, but when the weekend comes around he becomes the king of the dancefloor. He also goes through women as fast as he does his boogie shoes. The film features the gritty urban discontent that was consistent with many films of the 1970's.
The picture is far deeper than just a dance flick, it explores the relationships and acceptence that most people crave. Most importantly it established Travolta as a real leading man and someone who was more than just a Sweat Hog. He received an Oscar nomination for his role.
