Review of Sarah Silverman: A Speck of Dust (2017) by Mike A — 02 Jun 2017
I watched the first 18 minutes. She's good at what she does, and I was amused by her routine, but not laugh out loud funny. The big problem with this special is the direction/production decisions. Much of it is shot in close up, like from the waist up.
And the laughter from the audience is mic'd so it sounds like a laugh-track. The woman I watched it with totally agreed. There weren't many shots of the audience, and when we did see them, it was dark silhouettes from behind.
Contrast this with the way Amy Schumer's new "Leather Special" was shot. Amy Schumer's comes across as way more relatable, and you feel more like you're in the audience with her.
The way it was shot had a lot to do with it.
