Ingmar Bergman's sequel to Scenes From a Marriage, Saraband still manages to be engaging with its well-developed characters and histories, but seemed longer than Scenes from a Marriage, in comparison.
The pacing is not only a lot slower but the characters spend the first hour talking about their past lives, which I knew all about anyway from seeing the first film. It seemed as if this was partially made for people who had not seen the first film.
Despite all of that the last hour and climax, particularly, make it worth it's visit and Julia Dufvenius give a great performance as the granddaughter of Ullman and Josephson. I am glad this film was made for the sake of how brilliant the original was and it's definitely worth a watch if you have seen and loved the first.
But you need to the original first to probably appreciate this more. Saraband is well acted and put together, if a bit too straightforward in its telling of its tale.
