Review of Saraband (2003) by Peter B — 29 Jul 2007
In 1989, Ingmar Bergman ended his career in films with the masterpiece "Fanny and Alexander.".
In 2003, he ended his career behind the camera with "Saraband," a movie made for Swedish television.
A spiritual sequel to his "Scenes from a Marriage," Saraband is the master reaching the peak of his own mountain.
Like Ozu in his old man days, Bergman has reduced himself, not held himself back, rather he has grown to understand that instead of swooping the camera about and putting his talent on show, he will be still and quiet, like a spectator in the theatre, and allow the actors to bring the film to life.
And in this, his final film, Ingmar Bergman achieves a simple, quiet understanding. Liv Ullmann and Erland Josephson are the stars, but Borje Ahlstedt, Julia Dufvenius and Gunnel Fred deliver absolutely stunning performances.
Unmatched in international cinema, Ingmar Bergman takes a final bow before the closing of the curtains and the drowning roar of the tears and the applause of his audience.
