Review of Sans Soleil (1983) by Felix M — 22 Nov 2008
"I've travelled several times around the globe, and now only banality still interest me".
This is one of the first phrases of the movie. To me this sound like a declaration of love to details.
This is the only movie up to now I watched three times in a row in one single week.
The movie is pure poetry! A brilliant reflection on time put into the context of contrasted cultures.
Chris Marker gives insides about african and japanese cultures without using cliches.
The following scene touched me deeply because of its beauty:
There is a moment when Chris's camera is playing with the look of a woman on the marked in Guinea Bissau (where woman don't look into the eye of strangers). And there, protected between passing people, the camera captured a very short glance of curiosity, on one single frame of the film.
