Its difficult to describe what San Soleil really is without really racking your brain the best I could come up with is its some sort of visual travel essay about countires that some partsof the world dont understand.

The film is a visual letter as various images are shown on the screen along with the corrrespondence of the feamle narrator who allows us to witness striking images that no other film could possibly compete with.

In Japan for example we have a temple that pays homage to the souls of cats and a festival that involves the burning of broken toy dolls.

Director Chris Marker also pays tribute to Hitchcocks Vertigo with one of his colleagues returning to the site of several loacations used in that Masterpiece.

The film is one to engage the brain and I really enjoyed the fact that Marker sometimes poses more questions thatn he answers ,that after all is the sign of a great film maker.
