Review of Samurai I: Musashi Miyamoto (1954) by Richard D — 12 Aug 2014
The first movie in the trilogy of films where Toshiro Mifune plays legedary samurai Musashi Miyamoto. It follows Shinmen Takezo, a wild young man who leaves his village with his friend Matahachi to seek glory in war.
That doesn't quite work out, and Takezo ends up returning home and becoming a hunted fugitive due to a series of misunderstandings. He's eventually captured and sets aside his wild ways to become Musashi Miyamoto.
This is Mifune's film all the way. It's also a gorgeous technicolor production that looks stunning on Criterion's Blu-Ray.
