Review of Samson and Delilah (2009) by Sam K — 12 Oct 2010
This film is very subtle in nearly everything it shows. This made it very inaccessible to me. I know very little about the cultures, history and political situation in Australia. I didn't pick up on quite a few of the subtle clues until I read a few reviews afterwards.
And the film is really build on the subtle clues. There is almost no dialog in the film. This makes it very important to understand why everything happens. You need to be able to see which events occur to move the story along and which events occur to tell us more about the characters.
Normally I don't mind working a bit to understand a film, it is actually a prerequisite for a truly great film. But with the handicap of not understanding the cultural references, I did not manage to fully enjoy it.
I can feel this film has the potential to be very powerful, to really move people. But this is only true for a certain group of people. You need to like the more 'artsy'-type of film and you need to know a bit about the Australian culture and problems.
