Review of Samsara (2011) by Steve P — 04 Jan 2013
A fascinating collage of images from 25 countries and the product of 5 years of filming. There is no verbal commentary - just images and music. Samsara is Sanskrit for "the ever turning wheel of life".
The documentary takes us on a journey from nature to religion to modern civilisation and back to nature again. While there is no explicit message one must acknowledge that the film makers chose to juxtapose images in a certain order and chose the music to accompany the images.
No doubt every viewer will interpret the film in their own way. For me, one of the themes is the way in which modern culture is often disconnected from nature and often destroys and dominates it. It's a truly meditative and sometimes jarring journey but will leave you thinking deeply about the diversity of our planet home.
