Review of Samsara (2011) by Jon Y — 16 May 2013
Director Ron Fricke has refined his vision of Baraka (1993) and created a more thoughtful (and disturbing) film. In Fricke's Ozymandian world view, the individual is often reduced to a nameless cell in an unfathomable matrix of despair. The human spirit becomes anonymous in the context of greater wonders, those natural and the conceits of men who would have us call them great.
We are offered a glimpse of hope in the powerful Cebu Provincial Detention Center (Philippines) segment, then rewarded with a moment of singular beauty from the Balinese Tari Legong Dancers of Indonesia. A rare smile is well worth the wait.
The Michael Stearns score is restrained and effective.
