Review of Salvage (2006) by David T — 22 May 2014
This is one hell of a good low-budget horror film. Decent acting (especially from lead actress, Lauren Currie Lewis), killer suspense, a modest yet very effective amount of blood and gore, and a clever, unpredictable screenplay that is full of twists and turns without being heavy handed. I expected a silly knockoff of Hostel/Saw when I pressed play. Instead I got a well-crafted, intelligent whammy of an indie horror gem that kept me thrilled to the last frame.
My one and only gripe about this film is the use of indie stoner rock ballads during critical suspense moments. The songs are not bad at all, actually my kind of music, but they do not fit with the atmosphere of the film, and kind of kills the suspense in a few scenes towards the end. But all in all, this is a diamond in the rough. And seeing as how I purchased it in one of Echo Bridge's notorious $5 multipacks, along with 19 other films, I'd say I got a heck of a lot more than my 25 cents worth. I'd have paid $20 for this film alone and still would have been happy. If you like original, mind-bendy b-horror, you owe it to yourself to check this one out.
