Were it not for the presence of likeable romantic leads Blunt and McGregor, and, to a lesser extent, Scott Thomas as a comical, yet also ridiculously over-the-top, press secretary to the PM, Hallstrom's painfully signposted rom-com, adapted from a bizarre real-life story, would have floundered like fish in the desert.
