Review of Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (2012) by Neil P — 13 Sep 2012
The concept is intentionally ridiculous and I liked the political satire surrounding it. I also thought the romcom set up was nicely different in both characters appearing to be in stable relationships. The worst parts of the film are the utterly ridiculous "action" scenes which are stupid and cringeworthingly sterotypical and generic. It tore me out of the film and I think it would have been better off without. Ewan McGregor is solid and entertaining as always and Emily Blunt seems to be very good at playing the love interest (I've yet to see her play something different though). The weirdest thing for me was that I felt the film seemed to shine the most when having the scenes with Kristin Scott Thomas to the point where I was left wondering why the writer/director didn't just make a political style satire with her as the lead.
An entertaining film that fails to deliver on any of the aspects it attempts but held together by solid performances and nice scenery.
