Review of Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (2012) by Ina S — 15 Dec 2012
Entertaining film best described as "cute". If movies are like desserts, this is a sorbet, light and quickly consumed, great for cleaning your palate in between more substantial courses. Lasse Hallstrom guides the story with his usual delightful imagery and assembled a great cast.
All lead actors shine, but Kristin Scott Thomas as the Prime Minister's Press Officer was my personal highlight - a superb comedic performance. The movie itself is charming, but altogether too predictable.
Especially toward the end of the film it loses track of supporting characters and can't quite decide between comedy, drama, love story and social commentary. Worth watching if you are more in the mood for sorbet instead of, say, tiramisu.
And absolutely a must-see if you are a fan of Emily Blunt or Ewan McGregor, of course. That it has actually been nominated for awards is completely unnecessary, though.
