Review of Salesman (1969) by Michael S — 30 Nov 2007
The Maysles' bros. do voyeurism well, but I do think there are serious moments where they fudge the cinema verite unspoken rules of authenticity. Still, you are transported back to a flesh-out sixties world, with the boat-sized cars and the bedrock bungalows, and the reserve enforced on language and conversation, it is a thoroughly enjoyable mode of time travel.
If the penultimate scene was genuine, not staged (which I think it was) then that is great drama fortuitously captured on film.
