Review of Sakuran (2006) by Su-Anne C — 08 Feb 2008
Stunning visual.
Colors, patterns, lighting, make-ups, hair-dos, clothings... all ACE. Was drawn to this film initially 'cos I knew Shena Ringo was doing the music, and she didn't fail at all. Her traditional Japanese plus rock/jazz modernized the whole film (can't really hear lyrics in English though... would rather she sing in Japanese...).
Unlike the Memoirs of a Geisha however, these weren't made a spectacle and overwhelm the storyline The plot is still the main, them being outstanding green-leaves which just should have have been there for the flower to bloom. But one warning, truth in historical background shouldn't be sort at in here (e.g. the presence of katagana imported words: "technique" etc. ). -Su-.
