Review of Sakuran (2006) by Alexandra G — 18 Oct 2008
There are two things that I adore about this movie. First, it is a true visual feast (spectacle of vivid colours, ornaments, fabulous production designs and costumes). Second, the soundtrack by the great Shiina Ringo (mixing jazz, rock, pop and even cabaret).
This poppy tale reminds a bit of Moulin Rouge or Marie Antoinette. I found the plot and directing a bit dissapointing, but I guess, a manga adaptation is not an easy thing to do. Some scenes are truely splendid: like the death of Takao Oiran or the official walk of Kiyoha (when becoming an Oiran).
I'm sorry, that Kanno Miho only played a small part :(.
