Review of Saints and Soldiers (2003) by James H — 10 Oct 2004
This is the best film Mormon cinema has to offer (admittedly, not a very flattering compliment) and a perfect example of substance over style. Working with a shoe string budget, the filmmakers have created a compelling tale of a religious WWII soldier who is stranded with a small group of American troops behind enemy lines.
Haunted by a horrific disaster, the soldier uses his faith to get him through the nightmare, and inspire the other men. One of the best things about this film is that the protoganist is not obviously a Mormon.
He could be possibly belong to almost any Christian denomination. The film isn't some obvious parade of LDS values, but an intimate story of faith during wartime. Recommended.
